Terms

Last updated 31 August 2026

The short version. There is no subscription, nothing renews, and there is nothing to cancel. Saving recipes and cooking from them is free. You buy credits to read photographs and handwriting, and a cookbook when you want one — each a single payment. A pack you have not used can be refunded in full from Credits & purchases.

1. What Spatterbook is

Spatterbook reads recipes out of what you paste, keeps them in your account, and helps you cook from them. Reading a photograph, a screenshot, handwriting or a video costs a credit, because each one costs us considerably more to run. It can also typeset your recipes into a press-ready PDF cookbook that you print yourself — we do not print, bind or ship anything physical.

2. Your account

You need an account to save recipes. Keep your sign-in details to yourself; anything done through your account is treated as done by you. You must be old enough to enter a contract where you live.

3. What you can buy

The free account is not a trial. It holds as many recipes as you like, lets you delete them, gives you cook mode and printable recipe PDFs, and does not ask for a card. Reading pasted text is subject to a daily limit, shown in the app, because each reading costs us a model call.

Two things cost money. Credits, which read photographs, screenshots, handwriting and video — one credit per recipe. And cookbooks, which let a book draw on your whole library rather than only the dishes you have cooked. Both are sold in packs, at the prices shown when you buy.

Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel. Every purchase is a single payment. We will never charge you again without you buying something again. Credits expire 12 months after purchase; the date is shown on your billing page. Cookbooks do not expire.

Who you are paying. Payments are handled by Polar, who are the merchant of record — they take the payment, handle any tax, and send your receipt. Prices shown exclude local tax, which is added at checkout. We never see your card details.

4. When digital content is delivered

Buying a pack does not deliver anything. It puts a balance on your account. What gets delivered is the reading of a recipe, or the cookbook you generate — at the moment you ask for it.

That distinction is the whole basis of the refund policy below: while a pack is untouched, nothing has been supplied and you can have your money back. The moment you spend from it, something has.

When you spend a credit or generate a cookbook you are asking us to supply that content immediately, and you accept that once it has been supplied you lose the statutory right to cancel and receive a refund that would otherwise apply to distance purchases of digital content, including the 14-day right of withdrawal available to consumers in the UK and EU. That right is not affected while the pack sits unused.

5. Refunds

An unused pack can be refunded. Credits and cookbooks are sold in packs, and a pack can be refunded in full for as long as it is completely unused. Ask from Credits & purchases and the money goes back to the card you paid with.

Using any of a pack ends that. Spend one credit of twenty and that pack is yours — what is left is not separable from what you consumed. The same goes for a multi-book bundle: make one book and the bundle is used.

Every pack stands on its own. If you spend nineteen credits of one pack and then buy another, the new one is untouched and still refundable. Credits are always spent from the pack closest to expiring, so the pack you bought most recently stays refundable longest.

Credits expire twelve months after purchase, and expired credits are not refundable — the date is shown on your billing page well before it arrives.

We will also refund, at our discretion, where we have charged you in error, charged you twice, or been unable to provide the service for a sustained period. Ask us and we will look at it.

Nothing here removes rights you have by law that cannot be excluded.

6. Your recipes

Recipes you add stay yours. Nothing you save is public: your library is visible only to you, and we do not publish it, share it, sell it, or use it to train anything.

The licence you give us is only what is needed to run the service for you — to store your recipes and images, process them so they can be read and searched, and typeset them into the PDFs you ask for. It lasts as long as your account and ends when you delete it.

What you confirm when you capture something: that you are entitled to make a copy of it for your own use, and that you are using Spatterbook to cook from — not to reproduce, republish or sell someone else's work. A lot of what people capture was written by somebody else, and copying a page for your own kitchen is a very different thing from putting it back out into the world. Cookbooks produced by Spatterbook are for personal, non-commercial use.

8. Fair use of the service

Please do not automate the capture endpoint, work around the daily limit, resell access, or use the service to bulk-copy someone else's catalogue. Each reading costs real money to run, and the limit is what keeps the free account free for everyone.

9. Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time from Account settings. Deletion is immediate and permanent: your recipes, photos, cookbook settings and sign-in are removed and cannot be recovered. There is no subscription to cancel first. Any credits or cookbooks you have not used go with the account and are not refunded, so if you have an untouched pack you want the money back for, ask for the refund before you delete.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or where we are required to.

10. Changes, and everything else

We may change these terms; if a change materially affects what you pay or what you get, we will tell you before it applies to you. The service is provided as it is, and we do not promise it will be uninterrupted or that every recipe will be read perfectly — extraction is automated and sometimes gets things wrong, so check a recipe before you cook from it.

To the extent the law allows, our liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Questions about billing or a charge you did not expect — get in touch before disputing it with your bank; it is almost always faster. What we do with your data is in the privacy policy.
